A Series of Indulgence

This body of work investigates indulgence by means of materialistic desires that may or may not be good for the mind, body, and our landscape. I approach “indulgences” which appear more like bad habits, and repurpose the physical evidence of partaking in these acts of indulgence to create installations and paintings that evoke the impact these desires have on the body. Drinking and smoking are prevalent to our social fabric, and many medical concerns. We intake these toxic substances in the name of slaking a temporary need, and our bodies reap the consequences. That is why much of this work consists of shattered glass and dismantled cigarette cartons

Retail therapy is another indulgence discussed in this work. “Consumer’s Delight” is a grand sculpture standing about 7’ tall, made of many paper bags constructed from grocery catalogs you get in your mail. It is a gorgeous piece reminiscent of Christmas tree’s, ball gowns, and exploding clothing hauls. It is a piece that confronts buying basic needs like food versus buying luxury items that bring a more materialistic sense of fulfillment.

My singular self portrait “Who Should I Listen To?” is on a custom made surface. My dilemma comes from the indecision of which conscience I should weigh my next move toward. Do I listen to the angel on one shoulder who is telling me to make good choices? Or do I indulge my inner devil or demon who enjoys a night of debauchery and all the ups and downs that accompany other evils?
